The real question
is why this it so difficult a change to make stirring up so much controversy. It is this author’s belief the Indian mascot is a mirror to those who refuse to view their history as conquest and theft from
the American Indian people, theft of their wealth, their natural resources, their land, their culture, and now with the “New Agers”, the theft of their religious practices. No one wants to look in the
mirror and see the benefits of their life today are based on a policy of genocide equal to the Nazi holocaust. All this was achieved by immigrants with a judicial system promoting the conquest and persecution of
Native people based on religious differences, cheating on and breaking over 200 treaties with the American Indian nations, and the murder of women and children at places like Gnadenhutten, Sand Creek and Wounded Knee.
It is a far different history than the one the resulting Manifest Destiny society made for their history book. We can expected those in power will continue to defend the telling of their history as they
would have it
